The next day, a brief tour of Delhi takes you to the Red Fort and one of the most famous mosques in Delhi, Jama Masjid. Stroll through the colorful Chawri Bazaar, looking for handicraft bargains. When the Emperor of India shifted the capital of the Indian Empire from Calcutta to Delhi, New Delhi was laid out to the south of Mughal Old Delhi, and overlays the site of seven ancient cities. As a result, New Delhi is filled with many historic monuments including 16th-century Humayun's Tomb and the 13th-century Qutub Minar. Surrounded by formal gardens, the terraces at the tomb provide superb views of the surrounding countryside. Drive along Rajpath (the King's Way), a broad avenue flanked on both sides by ornamental ponds, and see the imposing India Gate, a war memorial to commemorate the Indian soldiers who died in World War I. At the opposite end of Rajpath is Rashtrapati Bhawan, the official residence of the President of India. Later, return to your hotel.
